25 Days of Delight
As an unapologetic Anglophile, choosing an advent calendar felt oddly high stakes: Harrods, Liberty London, or the British Vogue Festive Calendar with its bold £1600-for-$519 value claim. Vogue’s sponsored unboxing videos kept showing up at my Instagram door until, eventually, this showed up at my actual front door. Just under 20 days in, and it’s safe to say this is one British indulgence I won’t regret.
On the Vogue website, you could see as much or as little as you wanted. That’s a brand willing to stand behind its product. I took a peek at just five of the items and got to $626, so I decided it would be worth it and placed my order. It arrived quickly (I did have to sign for it).
Because I have the patience of a small child—and needed to write this post before the boxes sold out—I may have jumped ahead. Although we are only on the 17th, I’ve actually looked at least 20 items, and I’m in love. It’s the full-size products that set this box apart, along with the mix of well-known, must-have items and some new-to-me discoveries.
So how can I rate it an “exceed” if I had the option of seeing exactly what I was getting before I ordered it? Some expectations are created by the brand, and some are implicit—shaped by a customer’s individual life experiences. That’s why it’s so important that product designers and marketers know their customer.
Over the last 28 years as a mother, I’ve rarely stopped to think about what I want for Christmas. If you asked, I probably would have said, “a holiday where all my kids get along.” I can’t quite explain how much I’ve enjoyed rushing to my office each day to open a new door and discover my present for the day.
Do I love everything so far? No, but that’s personal preference. My friends will happily take the things I don’t love, and I love enough of the calendar that it was more than worth it.
Overall Rating: EXCEED—not just on the promised £1600 value, but on my implicit expectations: feeling genuinely indulged, surprised, and a bit like Christmas was finally for me again.
