Are We Really Taping Our Mouths Shut While We Sleep?
Everyone wants us to tape our mouths shut while we sleep. My family would love it if I kept mine taped day and night. That's not happening. Still, the trend made me curious. Does the research support it? And which tape would I trust on my mouth for eight hours?
This is my personal experience, not medical advice. Talk to your doctor before trying mouth tape.
What I Expected (the promise)
The trend promises better sleep, less snoring, and breathing through your nose instead of your mouth.
The research is thinner than the hype. Nasal breathing has documented benefits, but mouth taping is a different question. A 2025 systematic review found just 10 studies involving 213 people, with mixed results and safety concerns for people with nasal obstruction.
Research supporting nasal breathing doesn't prove taping your mouth shut is the best way to get there.
What I Tried
My jaw slides back when I sleep, so I breathe through my mouth. With my provider’s OK, I tried three different mouth tapes:
My verdict: MEET, for all three. Each one does what it says. The right one depends on how much of your mouth you're willing to cover.

What Happened (real life)
TapeHer Mini is the smallest, and the finished product, including the adhesive, is PFAS-tested. It costs about $1.10/night.
What I liked: It's the smallest strip I tried. My mouth didn’t feel completely sealed. What I didn’t like: No skincare extras. Bottom Line: My favorite style because of the size.
MyoTape is the least restrictive. It surrounds your mouth instead of covering it. It’s about $0.67/night.
What I liked: The least expensive option. You can still open your mouth. What I didn’t like: It’s a lot of adhesive touching your face, and the brand hasn't published any material testing. Bottom Line: If the idea of mouth tape makes you panic, start here.
Ugly Sleep Club has skincare extras like collagen, in full coverage or with a mouth hole. About $1.05/night.
What I liked: The most published testing. What I didn’t like: Even the version with the hole touches your entire mouth; if that makes you nervous, skip this option. Bottom Line: If you want the added skincare extras, try this version.
What I’d Change
Every mouth tape should include skincare extras. Whatever you put on your face before bed comes off with the tape, so the tape should put something back.
Bottom Line (who will love these)
All three are a MEET. Choose by your comfort level, not the trend. And if you can't breathe easily through your nose or might have sleep apnea, talk to your doctor first.
One surprise: I panic when my mouth is sealed shut. I came for the trend and stayed for the jaw relief. My family is still waiting on the daytime version.
