Is Goop Beauty haircare worth the price?
At 52, I’m willing to try almost anything for smoother, shinier hair.
Hair changes as we age. Mine is drier, frizzier, and generally requires more effort than it did 20 years ago. Then there is Gwyneth Paltrow, who seems to age in reverse. I don’t have access to her resources, but I had high hopes when I tested three Goop Beauty haircare products.
Goop has built a beauty brand around high-performance ingredients, clean formulations, and an elevated experience. And the price points reflect that.

G. Tox Himalayan Salt Scrub Shampoo $55
What I Expected (the Promise)
Premium haircare that combines thoughtful formulations and noticeable performance. The shampoo & mask are both called Shinebath, so I expected noticeably shinier hair. And at $146 for all three, I wanted either extraordinary performance, a particularly unique formulation, or a noticeably elevated experience.
Goop says its beauty products are formulated without silicones, SLS, SLES, parabens, formaldehyde donors, PEGs, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, and several other ingredients on its exclusion list.
What Happened (real life)
All three products worked, but two of them are still a MISS.
In my testing system, “it works” isn’t always enough. Only one product felt distinctive enough to justify the premium price. A product doesn’t have to be terrible to be a MISS. It simply has to fall short of the expectations created by the marketing, product name, price, or some combination of the three.
Amino Acid Shinebath Shampoo $36
Rating: MISS
The shampoo cleaned my hair and lathered well. But for something called Shinebath, I expected more shine.
The packaging says it's gentle enough for daily use, but the second ingredient made me look more closely. The ingredient list is consistent with Goop’s stated clean beauty standards. Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate is a sulfonate, not a sulfate, so the shampoo is sulfate-free, but I’m not sure it’s gentle enough for daily use on my sensitive scalp. Gentle is subjective, so it might be perfectly fine for you.
Nutrient Shinebath Hair Mask $55
Rating: MISS
My hair felt conditioned and softer from the mask, but it was a little heavy for my fine hair, and at $55 I wanted a wow experience.
Goop describes this as an ultra-hydrating treatment that creates “frizz-free shine and salon-worthy hair.” The end result wasn’t dramatically different from what I’ve experienced with less expensive hair masks. The packaging was fine. The scent was fine. The results were fine. At $55, I wanted more than fine.
G. Tox Himalayan Salt Scrub Shampoo $55
Rating: MEET
Here is where things shifted. The G.Tox Himalayan Salt Scrub is a unique deep-cleansing scalp scrub. The scent is spa-like, and unlike other salt scrubs I’ve used, this doesn’t require additional shampooing afterward.
It’s expensive, but genuinely different from other scalp scrubs and effective at removing buildup without stripping my hair. My hair and scalp felt great afterward.
Final Verdict:
This test had a few good reminders. First, buying a celebrity haircare brand does not necessarily give you hair like the celebrity backing it. Second, clean, sulfate-free, and expensive don’t necessarily tell you how a product will perform. Finally, if you are going to call a haircare product Shinebath, we are going to expect noticeably shinier hair.
All three worked, but in my opinion only the G.Tox Himalayan Salt Scrub is worth the price.
At Goop prices, I expect more than “it works.” The Shinebath products weren’t terrible, but they weren’t distinctive enough to justify premium pricing.
So, I’m going to consciously uncouple from the Shinebath products. The G.Tox can stay.
