La Mer Review: Luxury Flex or Holy Grail?
When I posted my original take—MISS—I got two very different messages from two friends. One friend agreed immediately, the other vehemently disagreed, and then did the most La Mer thing possible: she loaned me her entire regimen for a full week while she’s galavanting in Mexico. So I re-tested three products. The Resurfacing Treatment, Revitalizing Serum, and the OG Creme de la Mer.
What I Expected (the promise)
La Mer is skincare folklore. It’s the product people whisper about like it’s a private members club for age-defying skin. Based on the hype and the price point, I expected:
noticeable transformation (plumper, brighter, “rested” skin)
a signature experience that feels worth it
results that justify choosing this over other effective products
My Experience (real life)
It moisturizes well. My skin felt comfortable and hydrated. But I never had that “I understand everything now” moment. No dramatic difference. No immediate wow. No clear reason (on my face) that this costs what it costs.
Implied Expectations (what the internet led me to believe)
With La Mer, you’re not just buying skincare—you’re buying a status symbol, a “you’ve made it” ritual, and the idea that this is the thing successful women use. It’s like the private jet of air travel. I can understand why people love La Mer. It’s rich, comforting, and undeniably luxe-feeling. But for me, the performance didn’t match the premium.
Also, I know fragrance is personal, but the scent isn’t for me. It reads “grandma” in a nostalgic way—comforting when I’m missing her, but not what I want lingering on my skin day-to-day.
Bottom Line (who needs these)
La Mer is for you if money is no object and your skin responds beautifully to it (many people say it does).
It’s probably not for you if you’re looking for visible change that clearly tracks with cost, fragrance bothers you, or you prioritize results-per-dollar.
Final verdict: This is a MISS for me. Not because it’s “bad.” It’s just not worth it for me at that price.
