Hand Cream Goldilocks Guide

Hand cream used to be one of the easiest products to buy.

Then my hands started aging faster than my face, which isn’t going to work for me.

A good hand cream should moisturize, absorb quickly and avoid leaving so much grease behind that you are afraid to touch your phone, steering wheel or clothing.

That is not asking too much—or so I thought.

I tested seven hand creams for moisture, staying power after handwashing, scent, ingredients, price and portability. All seven moisturized my hands. That was not enough to make all seven right for me. I wanted a hand cream that:

is deeply moisturizing
could last through more than one handwashing
absorbs quickly, not greasy or heavy
has a light or non-existent scent
offers performance at a reasonable price
has easy-to-use packaging
has a purse or travel-sized option
includes ingredients to support the skin barrier
has an ingredient list that wouldn’t give me pause (or paws)

The Big Takeaway

This was not a laboratory test. I applied each product, compared how it initially felt, and then repeatedly washed my hands to see how much moisture remained.

One product clearly lasted the longest.

It was not the one I ultimately chose for everyday use.

What I Expected

It might be easier to tell you what I did not expect. I didn’t expect to care this much about hand cream. Ever. For most of my life, I’ve walked by a counter, tried a sample, and if I liked how it felt and smelled, I bought it and moved on with my life.

If life were still that simple, you wouldn’t be reading this blog post. Now there are marketing claims, consumer studies, and formula variations by country. (I often purchase products while traveling internationally to compare the ingredient list to the U.S. version. I’m not thrilled when the same product has a significantly different formula depending on where it is sold.)

These days, hand creams promise to do more than keep your hands soft. Some include ingredients intended to support the skin barrier or improve the appearance and texture of the skin. None promised to overcome genetics. Despite this lengthy investigation, my hands do, in fact, look exactly like my mother’s hands.

What Happened

All of these hand creams are a MEET in the sense that they left my hands moisturized, but only a few were just right for what I wanted. For me, that was Nécessaire The Hand Cream for daily use and Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve for travel.

The iota, PAUME, and Nécessaire all have impressive skin-care-focused formulations. Although naturally-derived, the iota scent was too strong and the PAUME too medicinal for me.

The Nanette de Gaspé was the clear winner for staying power after hand washing, but the formula contains more fragrance and ingredient compromises than I want in a product I use daily. The beautiful packaging also released more product than I needed, which is particularly frustrating at a luxury price point. It’s not my everyday pick, but I do think it would make a wonderful gift for a hard-to-buy-for friend.

Aveda and Kiehl’s both have more conventional formulations that contain dimethicone, a silicone that some shoppers following stricter “clean” standards prefer to avoid. It does give hand creams a smooth, protective finish, so I didn’t consider its presence alone a reason to reject a product. Both brands offer smaller, travel-friendly options, but of the two, Kiehl’s had more staying power, so it was my travel pick.

At your recommendation, I also tried L’Occitane. It was similar to the Aveda; in the end, I chose the Aveda for the price point, but L’Occitane makes a good hand cream.
